In spring 2002, 1,704 students began the admissions process by sending an application to Montclair State University's various graduate degree, certification, certificate and non-degree programs. These students were not necessarily first time to MSU, but they were first time to these programs. This number reflects complete and incomplete applications. A somewhat smaller number, 1,291, completed the application process. The number of completes applications is up from last springs number of 1,141. Those with completed applications make up the applicant base from which the numbers and percents in the accompanying tables were drawn.

 

The number of completed applications for degree-seeking students was 36.2 percent (down fro last years 43.8 percent); 52.0 percent applied as non-degree students; 11.0 percent applied for certification programs; and another 0.9 percent applied to one of the certificate programs.

 

This spring the University accepted 85 percent of all applicants, up from last years 73 percent. Of those accepted, 73.1 percent, or 800 students, enrolled in classes this spring.

 

The Average verbal and math Graduate Record Exam (GRE) test scores for enrolled degree-seeking graduate students were 436 and 503, respectively. The average score for the Miller Analogies Test was 44 and for the GMAT it was 510.

 

The average undergraduate GPA for enrolled degree-seeking graduate students was 3.15.

 

Seventy-five percent of first-time enrolled graduate students were female. This spring, 9.5 percent did not supply any information for their race/ethnicity. But for those supplying this information, 63.9 percent were white; 12.4 percent were African American; 6.9 percent were Latino/American; 4.3 percent were Asian; and 3.0 percent were non-resident aliens.

 

Seventy-four percent of the first-time enrolled graduate students came from four counties: Bergen, 23.1 percent; Essex, 22.9 percent; Passaic, 16.3 percent and Morris, 11.8 percent. Slightly over 4.6 percent of the first-time students come from outside NJ (other states).
