The semester enrollment report is based on information taken from the University’s student information system at the time of the semester’s census date (the tenth day of classes). These figures reflect how many Montclair State University students are enrolled in courses at the end of this business day. This definition follows the New Jersey S.U.R.E. enrollment report requirements. Reports generated later in the semester will reflect students who have withdrawn from courses and will, therefore, be smaller than these official counts.

In fall 2001, 10,404 undergraduates are enrolled at Montclair State University. Most (98.0 percent) are degree-seeking students and 77.0 percent attend full-time. This is a 2.1 percent increase from fall 2000’s undergraduate count of 10,188.

The average credit load for full-time undergraduates is 14.1 credits and for part-time students it is 6.4 credits.

Freshmen and sophomores make up 24.0 and 22.0 percent of undergraduates, while juniors and seniors are 24.0 and 30.0 percent, respectively.

Six out of ten undergraduates are female. For those students who supply this information, 11.7 percent identify themselves as African American, 5.4 percent as Asian, 16.3 percent as Hispanic, 0.2 as Native American and 61.8 percent as White. An additional 4.6 percent are international students.

More than half, 57.0 percent, of undergraduates list Essex, Bergen or Passaic as their county of origin.

The five undergraduate majors with the most students enrolled are: Business Administration, Psychology, Human Ecology, English, and Biology.

Twenty-six percent of undergraduates (2,665) have not yet declared a major.

At the graduate level, 3,451 students are enrolled in fall 2001; an increase of 4.0 percent over last year. Fifty-eight percent are degree-seeking and most, 82.0 percent, attend as part-time students.

For full-time graduate students, the average credit load this semester is 10.8 hours and for part-time students it is 4.2 hours.

Graduate students are predominantly (72.0 percent) female. For those who do supply this information, 9.3 percent report they are African American, 3.1 percent are Asian, 6.9 percent are Hispanic, 0.2 are Native American and 75.4 percent are White. An additional 5.0 percent are international students.

Sixty-two percent of enrolled graduate students are from Bergen, Essex and Passaic counties.

The five graduate majors that enroll the most students are: Business Administration, Counseling, Administration and Supervision, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Educational Psychology.
