HIGHLIGHTS
The
semester enrollment report is based on information taken from the University’s
student information system at the time of the semester’s census date (the tenth
day of classes). These figures reflect
how many Montclair State University students are enrolled in courses at the end
of this business day. This definition
follows the New Jersey S.U.R.E. enrollment report requirements. Reports generated later in the semester will
reflect students who have withdrawn from courses and will, therefore, be
smaller than these official counts.
In
spring 2002, 10,004 undergraduates are enrolled at Montclair State University.
Most (99 percent) are degree-seeking students and 74 percent attend
full-time.
The
average credit load for full-time undergraduates is 14.2 credits and for
part-time students it is 6.6 credits.
Freshmen
and sophomores make up 20 and 21 percent of undergraduates, while juniors and
seniors are 26 and 33 percent, respectively.
Six
out of ten undergraduates are female.
Eleven percent identify themselves as African American, 5 percent as
Asian, 16 percent as Hispanic and 58 percent as white.
More
than half, 57 percent, of undergraduates list Essex, Bergen or Passaic as their
county of origin.
The five undergraduate majors with the most students
enrolled are: Business Administration, Psychology, Human Ecology, English, and
Biology.
Twenty-four
percent of undergraduates (2,370) have not yet declared a major.
At
the graduate level, 3,426 students are enrolled in spring 2002, an increase of
nine percent over last spring.
Fifty-nine percent are degree-seeking and most, 82 percent, attend as
part-time students.
For
full-time graduate students, the average credit load this semester is 10.7
hours and for part-time students it is 4.4 hours.
Graduate
students are predominantly (73 percent) female. For those who do supply this information, nine percent report
they are African American, three percent are Asian, six percent are Hispanic
and 68 percent are White. Racial/ethnic
information is missing for nine percent.
Sixty-one
percent of enrolled graduate students are from Bergen, Essex and Passaic
counties.
The
five graduate majors that enroll the most students are: Business
Administration, Counseling, Teaching, Administration and Supervision, and
Communication Sciences and Disorders.
